Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) Nigeria has announced that from March 2. 2026, prices for FibreX will be “updated”.

The flagship service was launched in April 2025, and the service name has so far been more updated than the cost of the service; from MTN Fibre Broadband to FTTH, then FTX(Fibre to the X). With “X” referring to whatever premises the user wanted their service to be at. Instantly, the service began to enjoy massive adoption in homes and small businesses.

MTN Nigeria, at the launch of the service, had a goal of connecting 8 million homes to FibreX service by 2028. As of this time, that target seems achievable as the service is already live in  15 states in Nigeria, namely,

Lagos, FCT, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Oyo, Kwara, Enugu, Ogun, Delta, Edo, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Imo.

With this level of national footprint, MTN is most likely to surpass that target.

The proposed price update, which is expected to be an upward review of the current monthly subscription fee, is coming at a time when the company’s share price has seen a significant upward trend and marked over 48% from the start of 2026.

Currently, the price for monthly subscriptions is as follows:

50Mbps—N 25,000

100Mbps– N 45,000

300Mbps–N 100,000

1Gbps–N 200,000

And of course, there is a plan for 20Mbps, which is hardly publicised, and costs N15,000 monthly.

The service is truly unlimited and only capped on the speed a user subscribes to. There is no fair usage policy, so the customer can stream and download as much data as they can handle.

Smart Tvs and other devices have been adopted by many homes since the service was launched, leading to a deepening of access to entertainment and education.

It is common to see MTN technicians on the streets of Kubwa at least once a week connecting a new user to the service. MTN FibreX has been very popular in Kubwa, as the infrastructure has been supportive to the rollout of the service.

Installation has also been very affordable, otherwise free; perhaps that has been the main driver of the mass adoption of the service. The initial installation fee of N 25,000 gives access to the 25Mbps speed for the first 30 days.

The MTN FibreX service has been the most accessible and affordable broadband internet service in Nigeria since the introduction of internet services in Nigeria.

It is therefore curious to note, and some may say too early, that the company is considering a price update, which, in the context of Nigeria, is a price increase which may slow down the rate at which new users come onboard the service.
