MTN has increased the subscription cost for their broadband internet service, FiberX.

The increase was effected on March 2, 2026, after what seemed like short notice to customers.

Also, as indicated, there are some updates. The company has introduced 2 new speed caps to their offering. These include FibreX Mini 25Mbps for a fee of ₦ 25,000 monthly and FibreX Advanced 200Mbps for ₦ 70,000.

Other tiers remain, but with higher monthly subscription costs on some:

Lite: 20Mbps–₦22,500

Mini: 25Mbps–₦25,000

Basic: 50Mbps—₦ 30,000

Standard: 100Mbps– ₦ 45,000

Advanced: 200Mbps– ₦ 70,000

Premium: 300Mbps–₦ 100,000

Prestige: 1Gbps–₦ 200,000

Perhaps the popularity and efficiency of the service is the reasoning behind this price increase. Because the FibreX user experience is topnotch and leaves little room for complain. There is practically no cost for onboarding, except for the first month’s subscription that starts from ₦ 25,000.

There is also no speed throttling as there is no fair usage policy. Users are free to download as many terabyte of data as the need subject to the maximum speed they subscribe to.  On their FAQ page, they put it like this:

Is there a fair usage policy on Unlimited FibreX plans?

A. No, our Unlimited FibreX plans do not have a fair usage policy. You can use as much data as you need without any restrictions on speed or usage.

The lowest tier of the service which is 20Mbps was increased by 50% from the original price of ₦ 15,000 and the 20% for Basic tier which was  ₦25,000.

Recall that about a year ago, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had approved the upward review of tariff on mobile data connection which saw upto 200% in the cost of data across Nigerian mobile networks.

It is not clear if this upward price review by MTN on their service recieved the nod of the NCC.

Or perhaps this is a positioning with which the company intends to ascert its dominance of the Nigerian internet market.
