Korean Movies & Nigerians.

In the late 19702 to 1980s, Nigerias embraced Chinese and Indian movies. By 1990s it briefly changed  to the with telemundos and this made lots of homes to purchase satellite dishes. By 2023, the passion changed to Korean movies and Nigerians started sourcing for series of these Korean movies on the internet so they would download  them, share them with their family and friends  all of whom will then watch there movies on their phone/tabs or laptops or further share with their colleagues at work  or school mates.

We have realized that Korean movies( K dramas) achieve goal 5 of the UN SDGs by providing equal opportunity and also breaking stereotypes .Its not strange now that Korean movies is a growing trend in Nigeria as a 2023 survey in 26 countries around the world showed that 41 respondents  like Korean movies. A further research  by NETFLIX showed that in early January 2023,Nigeria ranked no 5 globally as the country that watches K movies most followed by the Philippines ( as reported by Monkey Data).

The reasons why Nigerians like Korean movies are because of the following reasons:

1.Value systems: Nigeria and Korean cultures have some things in common including the family value system that teaches that family is key, decent work pays ,a sound education enables the growth of an individual that has a good character. The sense of relationships in Korean is so cool.

2.Cultural infusion: Nigerians watch these movies and learn their languages with a hope of migrating to Korea.

3Technological adaptation: Nigerians watch the Korean technologies with a strong sense of curiosity.

 4.Emotions: Korean movies have strong emotional story lines and love themes that appeal to the Nigerian viewers

5.Pop culture=Nigerians are now embracing the Korean pop culture as in Lagos,, we now have Korean cuisines and shops.

As Koreans showcase their culture to the world, its time for Nigeria to also do the same.
