Eye Service In Nigeria.

Published

on

In Nigeria eye service is one form of corruption that has eaten deep into the conduct of the workforce (public and private).Eye service is basically   a style of work performance done to please an employer. Or it can be defined  as doing a corporate task because you are being watched  and you desire favour from your employer. Eye service is corruption as it’s a display of dishonesty by a person or group of people inorder to illegal benefits and or promotion(good appraisal report). It is also a plain selfish act of display of power .I have worked as a government consultant and I have also worked in private firms and these things really do happen but they are so ugly. Eye service is done just to give the employer a false impression and make the boss think that the person/people is/are working(in the Nigerian local  palace it is referred to as FORMING BUSY or Busy Doing Nothing). Its a professional stunt by an employee to look  good in the eye  of his/her employer .It gives an impression to the employer that the staff knows everything.

According to the Chartered Institute, Of Personnel Management (CIPM),eye service is due to the following reasons:

1.Greed of money and distasteful yet aggressive desire.

2.Poor or no transparency.

3.High level of bureaucracy.

4.Large ethnic division.

5,Poverty.

6.Low level of education.

From my years of investigating this issue, I have found out that the government of Nigeria has mystery shoppers that move around the MDAs (Ministry’s, Departments and Agencies) to ensure that eye service is trimmed to the minimum or completely wiped off by monitoring the service givers and service receivers. In the military education system(primary and secondary military schools), I was informed that there exists inspectorates whom move around to ensure that teachers are in school (if anyone went out that he/she properly took permission) come to their schools on time and that they go for their classes and actually teach strictly according to the given syllabus.

For us to wipe off this for of corruption from Nigeria and achieve  Peace and Justice (UN SDG16) , we must do the following:

1.Wehave to invest time in good activities at the workplace.

2.We have to systematically approach our work by being busy yet effective.

3.Let our work speak for us (with an excellent foot print left).

4.Lets be professional, effective and remove sentiments from our workplace .Lets do the right thing.
