The challenge of waste management in Kubwa has gotten to a very concerning level.
This is what has caught the attention of the founder of Buddy Greenspark Initiative Mr. Chima Ernest Okoli, and his team of partners. They have expressed deep concern about how polluted Kubwa has become and have risen to drive advocacy and spur action towards reversing this unhealthy state of environmental affairs in defence of Kubwa, the residents and the environment.
Concerned about rising pollution and clogged waterways, the Buddy Greenspark Initiative staged a walk tagged “Kubwa Waste Walk” in Phase 4 to raise awareness and push for better waste management in the area, with the goal of expanding its reach across the town.
When asked about the his motivation Mr Okoli stated “one of the things we want to do today is to bring our attention to the fact that the environment; it’s just one that we have, we don’t have any other planet that we have to stay and so if we can get the best out of this environment, if we can conserve our environment, then we can have a better life”.
It is interesting to note that there is an active group of environmental champions in Kubwa who are passionate about seeing and bringing about a cleaner, healthier Kubwa. They turned out to lend their support to the Buddy Greenspark Initiative’s Kubwa Waste Walk.
The highlight of the Walk was to draw the attention of residents to the state of the Phase 4 Bridge river, which has since become a dumping site for domestic and commercial waste and to sensitise residents about the potential hazard this can pose to their health and well-being.
Also, members of the team were paired, and each pair went from door to door educating available residents and collecting data around challenges they face with managing their wastes, their history with organised waste collection companies and what they consider a fair cost for waste collection if they had an alternative to baban-bola.
If we can get the best out of this environment, if we can conserve our environment, then we can have a better life”
Making a presentation to members of the Kubwa Waste Walk team, a key to the Initiative Mr Adesuyi Adedotun of Dotmund Waste Services, concluded by saying that “the Kubwa Waste Walk 2026 is about climate change, it’s about environmental cleanliness, it’s about waste recycling, it’s about proper waste disposal, waste management“. He went on to admonish the team, saying “we would like you, in your individual homes to promote this, let us promote proper waste disposal, proper management and proper use of our waste products”
Also, expressing his view on the Walk, Mr Orinya Emmanuel, State Coordinator, Activista FCT, stated, “It’s a nice initiative; they say that charity begins at home, and it’s a nice thing that we all are trying to effect change. There are so many things that have been said about climate and all that. Right now, people are looking for climate mitigation, actually, not more stories of the harm; the story of the harmfulness of climate change, waste management is already out there. So we cannot keep singing the song of harmfulness; we have to start coming up with initiatives and ways to actually solve those problems, because now the problem has been discovered”.
