Today, by 5 pm, the Nigerian football team, the Super Eagles, will be facing off against the Pharaohs of Egypt in a match that, if given the chance, both teams may very well decline to play. Both teams have aimed for African apex football glory unsuccessfully in recent instalments. A player like Mohamed Salah of Egypt has gotten so close to lifting the trophy twice, and having the opportunity to try again kicked away by his former teammate, Sadio Mane and his Senegalese buddys must be such a frustrating experience for Salah. On the other hand, the personnel in the Super Eagles team, having failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, would have been consoled to have this trophy in their hands; chief among them being the former African Best, Victor Osimhen.

Both teams are expected to approach the match with a high sense of seriousness as they fight for honour and for a better ranking in the FIFA ranking table.

The third-place match, though a consolation, positions the winners among the elites of the game as a force to be reckoned with, and neither team would want to miss out on the chance for a podium recognition.

For the members of the current Eagles squad, Godwin Akpondor of the Guardian stated: They missed the opportunity at Qatar 2022 and missing the 2026 edition means a lot, as some of them might not be in the squad when Morocco co-host the 2030 World Cup due to age, which could lead to drop in their performance.

Clearly both teams are expected to approach the match with a high sense of seriousness as they fight for honour and for a better ranking in the FIFA ranking table.

Fans of the team do not have as much enthusiasm for the match as such, but because the game itself is beautiful, fans around Kubwa are expected to be attracted, tune in to express support for the impressive Super Eagles as that remaining spot on the podium should preferably be occupied by the Nigerian team–the Super Eagles
