Phantom energy sounds like a movie or a comic. No, it’s not — but it’s very serious.
Growing up in the early 1980s, our parents taught us to always switch off lights and devices that were not in use. These days the situation is just indescribable. We leave all those things running. We say “we are on Band A, we are on Band B” and that they are damn expensive but we just don’t do our part of the energy audit in order to save money.Whatever band you are on, you must not keep your electric lights or devices plugged in if you are not using them because what you are doing is you are causing phantom energy.
What is phantom energy? It’s the electricity used up when a device is not in use, but is still connected. Even though the device is switched off, as long as it’s still plugged in, that is phantom energy. To be more specific, phantom energy is 10% of your total bill.
So see the reason why you need to remove the device from the switch once you are not using it — whether you are at home or not.
This time, as we gradually migrate to the dry season (when we usually have strange home and office fires, we always tell people “because of fire, because of fluctuation, remove your devices from the switch.”. Now we all have an even greater reason to remove them.
Whether you are on a prepaid meter or estimated billing, you still have the tendency of causing phantom energy. So it’s important that we remove our devices from the plug when not in use.
Examples of such devices include:TV, computer, microwave, washing machine, blenders, toasters, mixers, coffee maker and your plugged power bank — remove it once you are not in the house or not in that room. The only thing you might leave plugged is maybe a phone that is charging.
This is one way to reduce energy consumption. And with less energy consumption, we have less generation of electricity, cleaner air, and less to bother with climate change and CO2 emissions.
