WATER POLLUTION IN KUBWA

Published

Under bridge Kubwa

Over 5 years of monitoring waste management in Kubwa ( a suburb of Abuja), it is clear that the natural water that stretches across Kubwa and is visible from the Phase 4 bridge, the PW bridge and the bridge after Phase 3 on the Kubwa expressway is being polluted by the scavenger boys( also known as Bola Boys).

This natural water, which is linked to the Lower Usman Dam, is being stripped of its pristine nature on an hourly basis.

Sadly, we have discovered that these scavengers get waste from landfills or illegal refuse dumps, they then search through them(looking for metals or food and other useful items) and then they pour the rest of the garbage into sacks which they take to the Phase 4 bridge, the PW bridge or the bridge after phase 3(towards NNPC bus stop) and they then dispose of the sacks contents into the water bodies by pouring the contents from these bridges into the water bodies at these points.

Will the water pathway be cleaned of trash any time soon? Will the people from the Lower Usman Dam region build a barrier to limit the mixture of these different water bodies? We wait, and we wonder.

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has tried several times to stop this ugly trend, but they haven’t been so lucky at it. The worst issue is that this act of polluting this natural stream is not only killing the aquamarine biodiversity along this water way but it also posses a great danger to human as this now  polluted natural water pathway has links to the Lower Usman Dam and for desperate restaurants near this water  pathway, they can decide to fetch this polluted water and use it to cook for their innocent customer (How disgusting! But they wont tell you, because they are cutting down on cost)

Even though this water pathway is characterized by outcrops (it has rocky paths), we tend to assume that this formation can form as a filter for the now polluted waterbodies, but the clear and present danger stares us in the face.

So many questions run through my mind at this point. When will the FCT Authority catch these boys in the act? Will the water pathway be cleaned of trash any time soon? Will the people from the Lower Usman Dam region build a barrier to limit the mixture of these different water bodies? We wait, and we wonder
