INFRASTUCTURAL DECAY IN ABUJA.
Abuja is a wonderful city with well planned districts and an amazing road network. For the fact that I have resided in this capital of Nigeria for over 19 years gives me the ability to judge the past , the present and kinda predict the future of the city.I have resided in the Gwarinmpa, Asokoro, Maitama and Garki districts and Kubwa ( an outskirt community of Abuja).
A few days back, I was on assignment early in the morning in the Utako and Jabi districts of Abuja.I was delighted with the clean houses I saw but I was so shocked with the poor waste management by the residents and businesses. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is thrown out anywhere with some just almost blocking the inner street roads.I saw sewage water freely flowing and these residents were jogging and taking early morning walks wth a total disregard for these ugly waste scenes that can throw a visitor or tourist off with serious disgust. At this point, it was clear to me that the Utako and Jabi districts have few garbage containers, a couple of their drinking water pipes are damaged and their sewage systems had some what of an anomaly as they were visible pipe.
In the past, we Nigerians would see these kind of societal problems and report to the concerned authorities. Some other Nigerians would team up then and fix the problem before they reported to the authorities.It seems that these kind of Nigerians have vapourised. What has gone wrong? Are we still our brothers keeper? Where is the love , strength and faith we pledged to serve our community with?
We keep saying that we like other countries but we refuse to do what those weatern countries are doing. Mico sustainability is the basic solution and it means one person triggering a small positive action that creates a positive domino effect on others around us. We must dispose our garbages properly and stop fly tipping .If we see a damaged infrastructure then we should fix it and properly/swiftly
