The True Test of Great Leadership One of the greatest indicators of institutional maturity is a well-executed succession plan. Succession planning is more than identifying a replacement. It is the deliberate process of developing, mentoring, and preparing leaders who understand the vision, culture, and long-term goals of an organization. When leadership transitions occur, the institution continues to thrive because capable hands are already prepared. The best succession plans are driven by merit, competence, character, and vision—not by tribalism, nepotism, favouritism, or personal sentiments. Leadership transitions should strengthen institutions, not weaken them. A recent example is the planned transition at United Bank for Africa, where Tony Elumelu is scheduled to step down as Chairman on August 21, 2026, in line with the bank’s corporate governance guidelines. The Board has selected Emmanuel N. Nnorom as the incoming Chairman, demonstrating the value of structured leadership succession. During his tenure, Mr. Elumelu helped strengthen UBA’s position as one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, expanding its footprint across Africa and beyond while building strong relationships with customers, regulators, shareholders, directors, employees, and partners. Similarly, Jim Ovia stepped down as Chairman of Zenith Bank, with the Board appointing Mustapha Bello as his successor—an example of pure leadership transition. Great leaders do not simply build successful organizations; they build institutions . The true legacy of leadership is not how long you remain in office, but how well the organization performs after your departure. That is the power of succession planning. This is the way it should be. Leadership is a process. Effective succession planning should be a deliberate , transparent and merit-based process that ensures leadership continuity, preserves the institutions values, and positions the organization properly for sustainable growth and long term success. These things are doable and we must be deliberate to get it right always.
