Monday Fish Market At Kubwa.

Published

on

Every Monday morning, along the NYSC road at Kubwa (Abuja),plenty of people (mostly women ) gather by the road side to patronize some group of men whom are fish sellers .These men travel down from Hadija Local Government Area of Jigawa State wish varieties of smoked fishes (mostly cat fish though). There is always the ready crowd of customers waiting for them to arrive and start selling  from as early as 6:30am on Mondays. Fishes are sold in cartons

Interestingly, during this Monday Fish Market, these fresh smoked fishes that are sold in cartons range from 50,000 to N60,000.Its cheaper wholesale purchase than the ones bought in the local Kukuwaba market that are so  expensive. A customer can buy a carton or she purchases it with a fellow woman there and they can further share the fishes. Most of the people that come to buy these fishes are for their homes while some are for their mini restaurants or chefs from some  big restaurants in Abuja.

Fortunately, this Monday market doesn’t cause traffic as they are off the road but for one to move from one stand to another is crazy as the crowd is much and everyone is pricing inorder to purchase more fishes and still have value for their money. My interview with one of the fish sellers from Hadija, Jigawa State revealed that they always finish selling all the brought to Abuja and yet customers are still there waiting for more. The sales usually ends by 4pm and you see women and few men walking away sad as the fishes have finished and they were unable to purchase due to their finances.

The amazing thing about this market is that it brings about a fusion of achievement of the UN SDGs   with its weekly operations & they are as follows:

Goal 1=The women and men purchase these fishes mostly for their families inorder to ensure that they add it to their family nutrition.

Goals 2 & 3 =The customers purchase these fishes inorder to ensure that their homes and restaurant clients have a good nutrition and a balanced diet especially when you consider the recommended daily allowance (RDA) equivalent a fish adds to the meal.

Goal 8=The men that sell the fish realize this goal as they are consistent on supplying the fishes to the Kubwa neighborhood every Monday and in turn they make money.

Goal 12=The fish sellers realize this goal and ensure that the link between the consumer and producer is not broken.

It is my hope that more neighbourhood market places like this exist inorder to enhance the food chain pathway in Kubwa.
