As days pass, it becomes an inconvenient truth that very soon , we will become old and it becomes outright necessary to gather our family members (our partner/spouse and children) and start talking about the hard facts of life concerning the distribution of assets, cash, cars, houses and financial investments especially as it has to do with next of kin and signatory rights.
These hard facts must not be left for emergency moments. The naked truth is that the best time to start those conversations is right now. Talks must be made and agreements must happen within the family now. If we don’t have those talks, we run the fear of embarassing sad moments like loss of assets when a parent dies .Its important to know that one thing that revolves around old age is dementia(memory loss) and so these talks can be so damn stressful or impossible if we don’t start them early enough. These talks and agreements must be transparent and without suspicion or bias (as some family members start looking at one another as gold diggers or opportunists). Therefore these family moments around inheritance must be done and carried out from a place of love, care and concern.
Early planning reduces conflicts and still keeps the family bong tight. The family heritage and resources must be kept intact inorder to have a happy family. The family is the basic unit of the society that triggers development. These assets from our parents(accumulated over the years) , shared in the present and transferred to our future generations is sustainable living. The next person on the inheritance list must be the spouse and children before another other person can be considered for good behavior or care(domestic staff, close associates and exlovers are not to be priorities till the family members are exhausted). It still marvels me when well educated people die and make those mistakes of putting their friends FIRST on the inheritance list. We need peace in the family and this is a sure way to trigger it despite that moment of grief.
