Poverty In Abuja.

Published

on

Here in Abuja, you move around Abuja and you see a lot of skid rows especially in Kubwa ( a location in downtown Abuja) ,Skid rows are neighborhoods with improvised people, homeless people and people with irregular or none existent jobs. The areas of Kubwa which can be clearly categorized as skid rows are the following:

  • NYSC junction
  • Arab road by mango tree bus stop
  • Liberty junction
  • NEPA road
  • Gado Nasco farm region off Lagos street
  • Behind SouL lounge
  • By FHA pedestrian bridge

These patches of skid rows in Kubwa gives us concerns as they are way too much for just one of the many locations in Abuja the capital of Nigeria.

Basically, these skid rows are clear telltale signs of poverty. Believe it or not , these are not good signs for a nation. So poverty comes when people don’t have a source of income (when things are not economically right). The UN is helping the Nigerian people to reduce poverty to the minimum. People claim that the government hasn’t employed enough young people but the flip side of this story is that a lot of Nigerian youths are making a living for themselves by creating their own small scale jobs without taking any loans such as these:

  • Scavengers on the phase 3 axis by the express who used to sort regional trashes but they got ejected as their long term location was turned into a housing estate ( a clear sign of gentrification)
  • Food sellers, vulcanisers and shoemakers at the NYSC busstop off the Kubwa -Kaduna expressway.

We cant divorce the fact that these are times of clear and present danger and as a people, we live in abject poverty. The situation is uglier as some people live on scavenging dustbins & wastefields looking for food to eat. However, there are self-employed people consistently doing their jobs hoping fRo a better life.Lets do our part inorder to realize goal 1 of the UN SDG
