STREET NAMES IN KUBWA: HOW MANY DO YOU KNOW?

Published

on

Not many people in Kubwa can give you the name of the street they live on, not to mention the name and location of three other streets, even when the streets are next to them!

“here we use landmarks, just tell them after Black and White or Water Board”

Well, almost everybody here knows Gado Nasko Road. It is currently the longest road in Kubwa, with about 5 and a half kilometres in distance, and it starts and ends on the same expressway–the Muritala Mohammed Expressway, aka “Kubwa express”. There is also Queen Amina Street in 2-2, Jaji Street, NYSC Road in Village, and Lagos Road in 2-1. These are popular streets and roads, but beyond these, it becomes difficult to direct people to any location using street names. To further complicate the matter, many street names have been changed, and it happened so fast that the FCT administration got concerned about how it affects his road projects and development that he warned against it. For example, in 2-1 there is a road that was once known as Kwali Street, but is now named Burutu Road. For some others, residents wake up and find street name signs pointing into their street. But still, it means nothing to them.

Should we even talk about calling street names to bikemen? One of our respondents said “you go dey there taya” She added, “here we use landmarks, just tell them after Black and White or Water Board”. The only time street names work is when using ride-hailing services because the names are already programmed into their apps and GPS gives them directions.

So how many Streets, Roads, Crescents, Close or Avenue do you know? Where are they located?

Can you find your way by yourself to Super-Sam Avenue if someone tells you to come and pick up N 1,000,000 without using any guide? Yes, that can be a challenge, right? That is why we must know the names of as many streets as possible in this our great Kubwa.
