The Gallant Fall Of The Super Eagles

A quiet, silent night in Kubwa, Abuja. The power-generating sets powered down, and it was all calm everywhere. Not the night that was expected, but so because the Super Eagles painfully missed securing that only spot in the 2025 AFCON final.

The match came down to attrition, and both sides stood their ground for 120 minutes, leading to a tie-breaking penalty spot shootout.

Fans at this point were only hopeful rather than confident because penalty shootouts have unpredictable outcomes.

When Stanley Nwabali saved Hamza Igmane kick, it was all joy and high excitement but that excitment lasted only a few seconds as Samuel Chukweze took an uninspiring shot that posed no challenge to the Moroccan goal keeper. It was however when Onyemaechi Bruno’s kick was saved in a bizzare manner that the television sets and the generators began to power down, leaving the atmostphere of Kubwa  gloomy, cold and sad.

The Super Eagles who had won all their matches faced the best team in Africa at the crucial point of the competion and they played gallantly against them in their home, full of fans and territorial  advantages.

The Nigerian side have all to be proud of because the 4-2 penalty loss was a gallant one.

The next challenge for the Super Eagles is against the Pharaohs of Egypt in a quest for the 3rd place reward.

It is hoped it will be a good consolation if they can triumph over Egypt.
