THE BLOOM ACADEMY-Uncle Americoco

Before The Bloom Academy, Kubwa, Abuja, learned to whisper his nickname with laughter, his name was Mr. Edward Onuh Alewo.

He hailed from Ayingba, Kogi State, but Abuja was where his story truly began. Fresh from Lokoja, young, hopeful, and stubbornly optimistic, Edward arrived at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa with dreams bigger than his frame. He wanted a federal job, air-conditioned office, ID card on lanyard, pension guaranteed. He even practiced his signature, just in case.

But Abuja has a way of humbling dreams gently… then violently.

After NYSC, instead of returning home, Edward stayed back. One “temporary” teaching job at a small school in Dei-Dei became survival. Survival became routine. Routine became identity. And somehow, fate pushed him further down Channel 10, straight into Bloom Academy.

Edward was smallish. Bald early. Late 40s and unmarried. But when he walked, he walked like a man whose shadow arrived before him.

He taught Further Mathematics and Basic Science, subjects already feared by students. The students didn’t like him at first. His face was always serious. His voice carried weight. And his cane? Ah. That cane was not a child’s plaything. Slim, flexible, precise. No student ever “chested” Uncle Edward’s cane and survived with dignity.

No one doubted him.
Because somehow… he looked like it.

Then came the morning of the snake.

If you wanted peace, avoid trouble.
If you wanted joy, avoid Edward.

Other teachers used him like folklore.
“Do you want me to call Mr. Edward?”
Instant silence.

Any student dragged into the staff room for misconduct, and Edward happened to be seated there? Final prayers were advised.

But what truly sealed his reputation were his stories.

Edward claimed he came from a lineage of fearless warriors. He spoke of forests that bowed when he entered. Of wild animals he had killed with bare hands. Of fights with bigger men, even security agents, where he emerged untouched. He told these stories with straight face, measured tone, and eyes that didn’t blink.

No one doubted him.
Because somehow… he looked like it.

Then came the morning of the snake.

Assembly had just begun when screaming cut through the prayers. A large snake, thick, coiled, ancient-looking, was spotted near the school field. Students scattered. Teachers froze. Fear sat heavily on Bloom Academy like harmattan dust.

Naturally, eyes turned to Edward.

“Eddie, go kill am na.”
“The king of the forest himself.”
“Is this not your area?”

For the first time in human history, Mr. Edward Onuh Alewo trembled.

Beads of sweat rolled down his shiny scalp. His eyes widened. His voice cracked.

“I… I dun wanna go. Please dun make me go. This ain’t my vibe.”

Silence.

Then Mrs. Ubong exploded.
“Which kind yeye Americoco be this eh?!”

The compound erupted in laughter. Students. Teachers. Even fear took a pause.

Security had to call for external help. The snake was eventually removed. Order returned.

But Edward’s legend never recovered.

From that day, his stories reduced. His cane still feared, but now with laughter attached. His name faded quietly.

No more Mr. Edward.
No more warrior lineage.

Just Uncle Americoco
The man who conquered Further Maths…
But surrendered to a snake.

And in The Bloom Academy, legends don’t die.
They evolve.
